Overview

Cycle Activity Leader has been designed for people wanting to introduce cycling activities for groups and users with Additional Support Needs. Course candidates will already be familiar with their audience, and understand their needs and aspirations. Our course tutors will tailor the content of the course to support candidates reach outcomes that are relevant for their needs.

By the end of this course, candidates will be able to:

  1. Identify the responsibilities of an Inclusive Cycle Activity Leader
  2. Perform cycle safety checks and assess participants abilities and needs
  3. Prepare for and lead a cycling activity for groups or individuals
  4. Perform dynamic risk assessment and complete activity planning cards
  5. Signpost participants to further opportunities.

Cycle Activity Leader is not aimed at existing cycle trainers looking to introduce inclusive cycle training opportunities. In this case Cycling Scotland recommends the UK Disability Inclusion Training or equivalent.


Minimum Age

18
  Candidates aged 16 & 17 can train as an Assistant Cycle Activity Leader.

What skills do I need?

Course candidates should be famliar with needs and requirements of their audience. Some previous cycling experience is required. 

What if I’m under 18 years old?

If you are aged 16-17 you won’t be qualified to lead activities by yourself, but will be allowed to assist adult Cycle Activity Leaders, and may be able to upgrade your qualification when you turn 18. Please note that places for 16-17 year-olds must be agreed in advance, as there are restrictions on the number who can attend each CAL course. How long does it take?

This is a one day course (7-8 hours)


What will I need?

You will need access to a bike and clothing appropriate for the weather.

A bespoke course for a group of 5-8 people costs £500

What's next?

On completion of this course you will have the knowledge and  resources to introduce cycling activities to your audience.

As a Cycle Activity Leader is is recommended that you hold a valid first aid certiciate, appropriate insurance, and have awareness of your organisation's operation guidelines and safeguarding policy.
